After returning from Fire Island, it was lunch time and we were all pretty hungry so we decided to have lunch at Nicky’s Clam Bar, which is conveniently across from the Fire Island Ferries terminal.

Most of us did not drink alcohol but I was curious about the Rocket Fuel, which consisted of rum, cream of coconut, pineapple juice, and ice blended together and topped with amaretto. I was surprised it was not garnished with any fruit such as pineapple and cherries like pictured. It was good but much stronger than the one I had at Le Dock in Fair Harbor.

We shared two appetizers – Fried Calamari and Steamed Mussels. The Fried Calamari consisted of lightly breaded calamari fried and served hot of the press, and with marinara sauce. The Mussels were steamed with a garlic herb white wine sauce and served with warm french bread. The sauce was so delicious we had to get more french bread to enjoy. I was surprised the second batch of french bread was not warm like the first one.

Some of us ordered soup, either Clam Bisque or Manhattan Clam Chowder. The Clam Bisque was a New England style clam chowder with clams and celery. It was served with oyster crackers. It was creamy and on the blander side. It was not as tasty nor thick as the one at Chowder Bar.

All of us ordered Flounder on a Roll, either broiled or fried. The flounder was lightly seasoned with paprika, served with shredded lettuce, slice of tomato, lemon, and tartar sauce on a poppyseed roll. There was a debate on which Flounder on a Roll tasted better. Despite everyone’s thoughts, I enjoyed the broiled flounder on a roll but I wish that it was served with a pickle.

Good spot to grab some take out and a drink as you wait for the Fire Island ferry. Friendly service at the take out counter, good comfort food, large selection of seafood fares, and reasonable prices.

Took a minute to find this spot tucked away behind the ferry parking lot, but man was it worth it. The location makes it feel like a real hidden gem. And the best fried oysters I’ve ever had. Custardy, oceany goodness.
