Another first for my month-long stay in The Gump. The portions are sufficient and everything tasted as if made with fresh ingredients. The home fries were the stars of the show and I recommend offering a Cajun Omelette… Western with the stew-textured Gumbo spooned over… good coffee and orange juice. We waited more than we ate though. Waited for menus (eventually taken from other tables), waited for coffee creamer (asked twice, got some from other tables), waited for silverware (coffee cooled), waited for food (to be fair, they were at about 75%), waited for toast (never came), waited for coffee refills (caught another server, meal almost finished), waited to see if we would be offered any dessert or anything else (it is a bakery), waited for a to-go box (asked twice, got it myself). The check was dropped off with the food… no wait… and that was our server’s last stop. Having interacted with all three, wait staff is very nice and reasonably responsive but appear a bit forgetful. Energetic and efficient service would make this place great. All said, we did have plenty time to chat and food was good, but service was an uninspiring drag on the experience. #FirstAndLast
Fresh food and good service. The house potato fries are a must try. You get vegan and vegetarian options here. The pancakes were nice and fluffy. Their menu is subjective.
My favorite lunch spot in Montgomery. Excellent food in a casual atmosphere full of the “who’s who” of Montgomery.
Ate there on Saturday morning 3/30/24.
Service:
They are very short staffed with one older gentleman running the floor. He wasn’t rude, but wasn’t polite. I believe it was because of our age, most of the people in the restaurant were 60+. I could overhear his conversation with them and he was nice and apologetic for the longer service times. With us he always had an angry tone of annoyance of us being there.
Food:
I ordered the Pecan waffles and my wife got the eggs Benedict. It took about 40-60 min for the meals to arrive after ordering. Her eggs Benedict was good, the potato wedges were overcooked, over salted and hard. My waffles arrived as plain(I had ordered pecan) they were hard and tore apart like ripping cardboard. Bacon tasted reheated. Overall with exception of the eggs Benedict, the food tasted as if it sat in the food warmer for 30+min after being ready. I didn’t complain because I didn’t want to waste any more of my day on a vacation weekend.
NOTE:coffee was good
Atmosphere:
Besides the poor service and the unpleasant staff the place is outdated and dirty.
There are glass chandeliers everywhere with a cleaning attempt you’d expect from a 2-star hotel. Just full of dust in the inconvenient but very visible places. A plant rack near the front door that looked more of a cheap garage storage rack for traveling plant sales. The menus were printed paper but were given to us stained and sticky.
I was not pleased with my dining experience here… I want nothing in return, but I do want to keep others of making the mistake of thinking this place will live up to any rating higher than 3.5 stars on a good day.
Seem like an old sandwich that was attempted to be made new. First time dining for lunch. Would have been nice to get my beverage at my table but it was never delivered.
