Come for the food, stay for the service.
Qualities of a great establishment: family owned and operated, Sun-faded pictures of family around the restaurant, hand painted menu sign, a constant stream of locals and regulars- walking and driving up- to the place, empty trays on the display 2 hours before close, signs limiting the amount of cookie orders, a chef willing to talk to you about how “you gonna love the crust” and Sovrana has them all!
Will definitely be returning just to stop in and say hey! And to at least learn their names. The Sovrana family was so warm and inviting, just like the enchanting aroma of the pizza! I’m no pizza connoisseur, but of the places I have been to in Albany, they were the busiest. From walks in looking for slices and drive-ups collecting whole pies (or two) there was a steady stream while we waited for order of GF pizza. Oh yeah! They have GF crust pizza! Which was tremendously satisfying.
Love this spot. A real neighborhood place with great pizza. They grow their own peppers for the hot pepper pizza (highly recommend).
Sovrana’s is the best pizza with great sauce and thick savory crust. It has been a tradition to get a slice even driving through Albany since I used to get it at the end of the night in my college days. It is the same and the family is the same. Great nostalgia. There is a pizza guy online who rates every pizza 🍕 place and this scores high there too according to the teenager that follows the guy.
This is a very good rustic pizza counter serve restaurant. It primarily serves college students in the neighborhood so temper your expectations accordingly. The food is very reasonable in today’s post-COVID-19 world.
The food while not fine dining is very tasty. The grandma pizza is too thick but it’s tasty and the vegetarian pizza was so flavorful but you need to ask for a bit more sauce on it otherwise it can be slightly dry.
The pesto sauce is vegetarian and the baked ziti was tasty but more like penne pasta in tomato sauce. If they ask you for cheese on the pasta I’d say ‘no’ the next time because it’s just melted mozzarella on the top.
John and his wife are very accommodating simple people that run this restaurant. You will find something you like for sure.
There’s nothing better than an old school family run Italian establishment.
Went here on a random Friday evening. Ordered two subs and had to get a slice while I waited. The atmosphere in this place is awesome, and I loved the sweet lady at the counter taking orders. Subs were great, and if you like thick style pizza then this place is for you. Looking forward to grabbing a pie here soon!
