5 Reviews on “The Ugly Rooster Cafe”
Enjoying my final day off from work, by having breakfast right down the street from the office.
Can’t tell you how many times I have driven past this location in the last 6 years, but enough that I remember when this was still called the Malta Diner. Which subsequently closed down, and then was bought and reopened as the Ugly Rooster.
Meant to try this spot sooner, but the times for when they open and when I need to be at work just never aligned and the trip here takes me roughly 30 to 45 minutes. But I have discovered, the wait was worth it.
Walked in around 8:00AM to find a pretty quite atmosphere, very classic cafe and diner ascetic, and super friendly staff. I was promptly seated and brought my decaf coffee in seconds, excellent service. My server Radine was pleasant and quick on everything, always checking in on me but not too much that I felt rushed or bothered.
Ended up going with an order of a waffle with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, and the 2-egg breakfast which came with eggs of your choice, toast of your choice, and home fries. Only took 5-7 minutes and my meal was on the table. The waffle was outstanding, 10/10, best waffle I have had in a long time. Had a vanilla flavor with a slight sweetness, so I didn’t need to use too much syrup. The whipped cream was not overly sweet either, and the tartness of the fresh strawberries offset things to form a perfect harmony. Would consume again. The eggs were fine, not much to write home about, but they did go great with the toast, making a fine egg sandwich without any extra pepper or salt required. The toast itself was the most wheat-y wheat toast I have ever had, crunchy crust, grainy flavor, and just enough butter to soften it without being greasy. And let’s not forget those home fries, which were wonderfully spicy. But I don’t mean “ow hot” spicy, I mean it had a tremendous pepper flavor to them. Normally I’ve found most locations over-salt their home fries, but here, that is not the case. Very fresh cracked pepper, tasty fried flavor, a slightly crisp exterior, and a soft potato-y interior. Thumbs up.
All together my bill only came to a little over $19, which was also a perfect way to end the breakfast. A delicious start to the day.
This was a last-minute breakfast find. My partner and I were in the area and got here at 1pm. The staff was attentive, kind, courteous, and the food was delicious. Would definitely stop here again. ๐ note to self for next time – queso has peppers in it, and was a bit spicy but still good ๐
We were driving in an awful storm and decided to stop for some breakfast/brunch. So happy we did. The service and food were very delicious. Portions were great and it just really hit the spot.
We had a scrambled something which was very delicious and a more traditional breakfast.
I recommend the marble rye as a toast option!
The French toast was the only thing that maybe could have used some love, but Iโm biased- i love challah French toast – So i wonโt take away any stars. Lol
If you like a diner experience with really good food and service this is where you’ll find it. Me and my husband just came here today (not our first time) and got the Fried green tomato BLT and the Southern style sandwich. The BLT was delicious. Perfect crispy bacon (a lot of it), fresh lettuce, perfectly tart green tomatoes with crispy cornmeal breading and fresh bread (I chose rye) with the perfect crispy fries on the side. My husband’s sandwich has the same perfect bacon, delicious sausage gravy, very good biscuits, fried green tomatoes, eggs and cheddar cheese with their famous home fries on the side. We both had their very good coffee (must try) and we are set for the day. The service is always warm and friendly. It’s the perfect spot to go to.
This was a fun spot to stop for brunch! We were headed out of town and wanted to check it out since it was so busy – a good sign of delicious food! We figured the wait would be super long, but the restaurant is huge on the inside and they have a solid system in place to utilize every spit and get folks in and out, so the wait was only about 10 minutes! We were a party of 3 and got a beeper and waited outside with most of the other people who were waiting. We were seated in a booth and our server was so friendly and fast! They were awesome! The atmosphere reminded me of a 70s diner. Dark wood, mirrors on the walls, classic tables and seats. I would say they could use an upgrade, but in this case, it works because it is just part of the vibe of the Ugly Rooster! Our food was awesome and we would definitely go back to enjoy everything on the menu! It was hard to choose! My husband is a reuben sandwich snob and has had probably 100 different reubens in his life… and he placed this one on his top 3!!!
