They have an impossible to beat lunch special: a sandwich and beer for $20! The deal included my favorite local beer, Alewife Downtown Blonde. Tons of food and drink options. Huge outdoor patio space.
I liked the space. It reminded me of an old fashioned Tavern. I didn’t try any food because I had read on line that they had Shrimp Scampi and that’s what I had in mind to eat. They have a good happy hour. The bartender was nice. I might go back at some point and try their food.
I specifically gave instructions for a burger cooked well-done because I am pregnant and pregnant women cannot eat undercooked meat. The burger arrived red inside, visibly very undercooked. I called the restaurant to explain and the woman on the phone was EXTREMELY RUDE. She told me, “I’m sure the burger was cooked well-done.” This was literally after I explained to her it was not. Well, look at the photo, since you don’t believe me. Instead of apologizing to a customer and trying to rectify the situation, you chose to gaslight me. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.
In October of 2023, we had my daughter’s wedding reception at The Skillman. From the start, the owner Gary couldn’t have been more receptive. He was patient as he answered all of my questions and concerns as we began the planning process from a distance, as I live in Florida but my daughter and her husband live in Queens. He was up front about pricing because he didn’t know what the market would be when the time came to prepare food but gave me an estimate which was spot on. We personally met Gary about 5 months before the wedding and he was was warm and gracious. On the day of the wedding Gary was available to us and couldn’t do enough for us. The food served was delicious and his staff was gracious and couldn’t do enough for us and our guests. The ambiance that The Skillman provided us was bar none. It was a very special evening that my family and our guests still talk about to this day.
When we are back in town, we will make sure to stop in The Skillman. Thank you Gary for your exemplary hospitality.
Nice neighborhood bar and grill. Reasonable value and good food. Worth a stop if you are looking for a bar and grill in Sunnyside but not worth a trip to Sunnyside to visit.
